About the UK Independence Party

The party : Founded for Britain's political independence

The UK Independence Party was founded in 1993 with the expressed aim of freeing Britain from the European Union. Its members come from all walks of life and political backgrounds. They now include many who have joined us (UKIP) from the Referendum Party. The UK Independence Party contested the Euro-elections in 1994, gaining 157,000 votes in 24 seats. Campaigning on similar platfroms, the Referendum Party and the UK Independence Party gained nearly 1 one million votes in the 1997 general election. UKIP has recently had it's first councillor elected, Neil Scarr was elected in Fulbourn when he took 53.6% of the vote. UKIP is the fourth largest political party in Britain in terms of European representation. It is Britain's fastest growing political party.

The Party is administered by a national executive. It has just elected a new leader, Jeffrey Titford MEP. The policy of leaving the European Union is embroided in the Party's constitution.

SUMMARY

* The aim of the UK Independence Party is to achieve British withdrawal from the European Union, in order to restore the authority for Britain to our own elected parliament.

* The party seeks free trade with the EU and co-operation over matters of common concern.

* Recent by-election and opinion poll results confirm strong support for the Partie's policies of retaining the pound and leaving the EU

* The presence of UKIP Euro-MPs will mean that the British political establishment will no longer be able to ignore the extent of popular concern about out membership of the EU.

* Recognising the widespread corruption in the EU, all UKIP candidates have given written undertakings which prevent them from bemnefiting personally from their expenses and allowancies as MEPs. They have also undertaken to make expense accounts available publicly.
